The story is of the many young (pre and early-teen) criminals inhabiting an area just outside the big city of Rio de. Poteva essere un documentario, ma non si è spogliato degli orpelli della cinematografia di genere. A contrario, si è "agghindato" ancora di più, forse per colpire.

City of God is about one such favela, about a bloody gang war and a pair of best friends and a boy photographer named Rocket. City of God is a superb film, however younger kids would not like it. City of God, the favela (squatter settlement) for which the movie is named, is one of Rio de Janeiro's most notorious slums.
In "City of God", desperation drives children to acts of outrageous violence, crime appears to be the only option in the moral and economic wasteland of the Brazilian favelas. Shocking, frightening, thrilling and funny, "City of God" has the substance to match its lashings of style. The film's most chilling image, revealed later on in flashback, is of the tiny Li'l Dice returning to the motel alone and gleefully slaying everyone inside. The film City Of God (Cidade de Deus) is based on a book by the same name by Paulo Lins (which in turn is based on some true events).
