Wild Strawberries (1957)

The original Swedish title is Smultronstället, which literally means "the wild strawberry patch" but idiomatically signifies an underrated gem of a place, often with personal or sentimental value. Canadian alternative rock band Wild Strawberries took their name from this movie's title. It was the first Bergman's film I ever saw.

Wild Strawberries is to my mind a far more complete and interesting film than the much over- praised Seventh Seal, for the simple reason that it says something negative. Wild Strawberries is a pensive film, and has a rustic charm to it, but is never overly sentimental. After living a life marked by coldness, an aging professor is forced to confront the emptiness of his existence. Legendary Scandinavian director Victor Sjöström stars as Isak Borg.
